a state in the northern central US on the Canadian border. It has more than 10 000 lakes, and is also called the North Star State and the Gopher State. The largest city is ↑Minneapolis and the capital city is ↑St Paul. It became a state in 1858. Minnesota produces 75% of the country’s iron ↑ore (= rock), as well as agricultural products, machinery and computers. The ↑Mayo Clinic, a famous medical centre, is in Rochester. Tourists visit Voyageurs National Park and the St Paul Winter Carnival.
