ragtime
rag·time BrE [ˈræɡtaɪm] NAmE [ˈræɡtaɪm] noun uncountable an early form of ↑jazz, especially for the piano, first played by African American musicians in the early 1900s Word Origin: [ragtime] probably from ↑rag sense 3 + ↑time. Culture: Ragtime is played with a strong rhythm which is ‘ragged’, i.e. not regular. Pieces of ragtime music are often called rags. The most famous ragtime musicians were ‘Jelly Roll’ Morton and Scott Joplin.
