Word Origin:
from the name of Oliver F. Winchester (1810–80), the American manufacturer of the rifle.

Culture:
The rifle was adeveloped in the US by Oliver F Winchester and first produced in 1860 by the Volcanic Repeating Arms Company. It was especially successful because it could be fired repeatedly without the need to put bullets in each time. Winchesters were widely used in the ↑American Civil War and are often seen in ↑western films.
