Sitting Bull
Sitting Bull [Sitting Bull] BrE NAmE
(c. 1831–90) a leader of one of the ↑Sioux peoples. He and ↑Crazy Horse defeated General George Custer at the Battle of Little Bighorn. He then lived for a short time in Canada but agreed in 1881 to settle with his people on the Standing Rock Reservation in ↑North Dakota, and in 1885 appeared in Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show. Because he encouraged the Sioux to keep the ↑Ghost Dance religion, US soldiers and Native-American police tried to arrest him and he was killed.
