Crystal Palace
Crystal Palace [Crystal Palace] BrE NAmE 1. 1 the Crystal Palacea very large building made of glass and metal, designed in nine days by Joseph Paxton (1801–65) for the ↑Great Exhibition of 1851. It took six months to put up in ↑Hyde Park in London. After the Exhibition, it was taken to a new park in south London. In 1936 it burned down. Its name was given to it by the humorous magazine ↑Punch. 2. 2 a football club in south London •He plays for Crystal Palace. 3. 3 a ↑stadium where sports contests are held in south London.
