- something that you feel in your mind: feeling, emotion

Note: feeling, but not emotion, can also be used to talk about what you feel in your body:

2 feeling emotions
- the way that you feel at a particular time is your mood; if you are feeling happy, you are in a good mood; if you are feeling angry or unhappy, you are in a bad mood, in a (bad) temper
What sort of a mood was she in?
- to experience an emotion: feel* happy, sad, etc
She began to feel worried. ◎ He didn't feel sorry at all.
- something that causes you to feel an emotion, especially sadness, sympathy, gratitude, etc, is moving, touching; if you have this feeling, you are moved (by sth), touched (by sth)
a touching scene ◎ a moving account of the tragedy ◎ I was moved to tears by the music. ◎ We were touched by your kind words.
- to make sb feel sad or angry: affect sb
The whole town was affected by the disaster.
- the place where a person feels emotions: heart
She's got a kind heart. ◎ I felt in my heart that it would be better to leave her.
- to be strongly affected by an action, criticism, etc: take* sth to heart
Don't take it to heart - it was just a bad joke.

- a person's personality, especially as it affects the way they behave and feel: temperament
She has a very calm temperament.
- easily made to feel unhappy or annoyed: sensitive (about sth); too sensitive: over-sensitive

- not knowing or caring how another person feels and whether you have hurt them: insensitive; noun (U): insensitivity
I was really shocked at the questions they asked that poor woman - I don't know how people can be so insensitive.
- not easily worried or annoyed by what people say about you: (informal) thick-skinned
I don't think George will mind the criticisms - he's pretty thick-skinned, you know.

3 showing emotions
- to show a feeling: express sth
He finds it difficult to express his feelings. ◎ We would like to express our thanks for all you have done for us.
- the look on a person's face: expression; showing a lot of feeling: expressive (adverb expressively)
She had a serious expression on her face. ◎ He was wearing a sad expression. ◎ an expressive face
- to produce water from your eyes, and make a noise, because you are unhappy or have hurt yourself: cry; the water produced from your eyes when you cry: tears (noun plural)
I was crying with happiness. ◎ tears of joy
- an expression on your face when the corners of your mouth turn up because you are happy: smile; when you make this expression, you smile (at sb/sth)
- to become red in the face: blush; noun: blush
to blush with embarrassment ◎ to blush at the thought of something
- to make short quick movements because you are nervous, frightened, excited, etc: shake*, tremble
My hand shook as I signed the cheque. ◎ I could see he was trembling with fear.

4 not showing emotions
- to avoid showing your feelings: hide* sth, hold* sth back/in
I was trying to hide my anxiety. ◎ A good cry will do you good - don't hold it back.
- the ability to control your feelings and not show strong emotion: self-control (noun U)

- to hide your amusement by not laughing or smiling: keep* a straight face
- a person who does not show any pleasant feelings is distant, cold; this quality: coldness (noun U)
